I HAVE a ‘feel good story’ that, if it had not been for a combi full of policewomen, I could have been another tragic piece of news.
A month ago I went down to SARS in Pinetown.
Business completed, I headed off to Green Cross shoes from where I was going to walk across to my car parked in the Sanlam Centre.
As I turned left at the robot (intersection of Kings and Glenugie Roads), I noticed two young men looking me up and down.
One in a red shirt, one in a green shirt.
With my bag and file tightly clasped under my left arm I set off being very aware that I was being followed.
Red shirt passed me and shouted to green shirt to follow.
The next instant I heard a woman’s voice call me from the road.
There was a combi full of policewomen who instructed me to quickly get into the combi saying that I was about to be attacked.
They insisted on driving me 100 metres to Green Cross Shoes, waited for five minutes while I made my purchase, then turned the combi around and stopped at the parking entrance to Sanlam Centre.
Two policewomen again insisted on accompanying me to the pay station and then to my car.
A combi full of good Samaritans to whom I was very grateful.
Their advice to me was “please do not shop in this area as Pinetown is full of criminals at the moment”.
