RESIDENTS of Inkonka Road in Kloof, and motorists taking children to St Mary’s School, were confronted by a deep dam of water which spanned the entire width of Inkonka Road on Thursday morning.
It was obvious that the drainage was unable to cope with the heavy rainfall of Wednesday evening, 21 February and was blocked.
On Thursday afternoon the water had not subsided so I reported the matter to the water department (Ref F180222/1702), indicating that the road was blocked and that it was only partially accessible to motorists at best.
On Friday I made multiple calls to the call centre for water and again emphasised that the road was blocked, the blockage was on a tight bend with restricted views of oncoming traffic and presented a high possibility of an accident because of motorists having to risk driving on the opposite side of the road to try and get through.

Inkonka Road is also the alternate route to Kloof if Field’s Hill is obstructed and it carries high volumes of traffic for access to the school.
I emphasised that these were, in my opinion, all reasons to try and prioritise the clearing of the road.
I was told by the agent at the call centre after my third or fourth call that it had been allocated to the Roads Department and a team had been assigned to the task.
After more calls I was told that it had been escalated but I was unable to get a reference nor contact number to confirm.
Needless to say the weekend has come and gone and it stands to reason that nobody uses the road over weekends so why bother to attend to the task over the weekend.
It’s Monday, 26 February and the road remains blocked, causing massive risk and inconvenience to motorists and the situation remains “a team has been assigned to the task.”
Is it just me or does it just feel that service delivery is something that our public employees are just not required to deliver?
I would be interested in the excuses from the departments responsible (no actually I wouldn’t – incompetence has become the accepted norm).
