THE EnviroServ saga continues, with local affected communities still fighting for freedom from the toxic air emanating from the Shongweni landfill site.
This after the recent court decision which has opened the way for continued dumping of specified waste “under certain conditions”.
While the operator, EnviroServ, proudly broadcasts that it has spent R70 million on alleviating the impact of its operation, what it has failed to inform the public is that only a paltry R18 million was actually spent on trying to fix the toxicity problem.
The balance – R44million – was spent on legal and consultants fees.
The DA remains committed to assisting this community. We will now demand that the conditions around the dumping of ‘certain waste’ be made public.
We will also hold KZN Environmental Affairs MEC, Sihle Zikalala, to his earlier commitment to installing three air quality monitoring stations in the province, one of which is to be placed at Shongweni.
The truth must be told and the public must be kept properly informed.
Ann McDonnell, MPL
DA KZN Spokesperson on Environmental Affairs
