Resolutions needed for water meter theft

ProAct NHW warns that there has been a spike in water meter thefts.

OUR communities have experienced another spike in water meter theft which is costing the city millions of Rands in water loss.

What is of great concern is that contractors arrive to stop the water flow, but ask the residents for tools.

They also don’t come with replacement meters.

When questioned, they confirm that there is no stock available.

The contractor gets paid a call-out fee and some of the contractors come from Umlazi to attend to Pinetown calls.

The ward councillors need to follow up with this and get some clear cut resolutions as to what’s going on.

A forensic audit should be suggested so that ratepayers can get clarity why there are no replacement units, as some victims have been waiting for more than eight months for these replacement meters.

We need our service providers to be accountable to service delivery issues.
