I hear the phrase “New year, new me” before the start of every new year. I see it on Instagram captions, motivational statuses online and mainstream media. The phrase is meant to be motivational and is used by people who want to turn a new leaf in the new year. New year, new me is all about setting yourself new year’s resolutions and forgetting all the negativity from the previous year.

People’s goals, which tend to revolve around learning a new skill, getting organised, making more effort with loved ones or leaving toxic people behind are quite popular – but vows to eat better and hit the gym are always at the top, especially after all the financial and bodily harm that December entails.
Personally, I’ve been struggling to set myself goals for the new year and that’s because I’ve had such high expectations from the previous years and the universe has let me down. I’ve also let myself down on plenty of occasions and am still failing to deal with trauma. This year, I don’t have any unrealistic expectations and I think that’s the way to go because without any high expectations there’s no disappointment.

One thing that people get wrong about having resolutions is that they aren’t patient enough with their goals. These said people tend to expect their goals to materialise overnight, which is unrealistic. I look at some of my friends who are trying to quit unhealthy habits like smoking, they get so discouraged when they relapse without understanding that relapsing is part of the recovery. Sometimes you have to go backwards to go forwards.
Another thing people get wrong about their resolutions is setting themselves drastic goals that they’re unlikely to achieve.
Suggestions for success
Rather set yourself some attainable goals, doesn’t matter how small their are.Discipline and consistency are vital if you want to achieve your goals, I think people forget that when they set their goals for the year. I have a list of attainable goals that young people can look forward to for the start of the new decade and always remember to take it easy on yourself this year folks, in this new decade, we are dealing with ourselves and traumas.
Attainable goals for young people:
1. No more procrastination
2. Meditate

5. Invest in yourself
6. Delete food apps to save money, there’s food at home!
