Make Pinetown safe

"A few feet away, while making our way to the main taxi rank, my son was unexpectedly surrounded by five guys. One of them was brandishing a pen knife."

MY son and I were attacked by five thugs in the heart of Pinetown while a large crowd of people, consisting of hawkers and passersby, looked on.

The incident happened on Tuesday, 18 February at about 3pm.

My son and I had just finished shopping in Hill Street. A few feet away, while making our way to the main taxi rank, my son was unexpectedly surrounded by five guys. One of them was brandishing a pen knife.

In the blink of an eye they emptied his pockets. He dropped the groceries and valiantly tried to defend himself.

Fearing for my son’s life, I dropped whatever packets I was carrying and attacked them. The fracas lasted for a while until we overwhelmed the thugs and recover my son’s phone.

To see a large crowd of about 40 to 50 people just standing, as if they were watching a movie, heightened my rage.

I asked how they could just stand there without assisting. Whatever happened to ubuntu?

A short while later, while sitting in the taxi heading home, I related the incident to passengers from our hometown.

Many of them had also been robbed by thugs in Pinetown.

I am hoping this scourge can be brought to the attention of the powers that be so that something can be done to make Pinetown safer.

Wishful thinker
