Queensburgh swimmer dives in for charity

Tatum Terblanche will tackle the 8-Mile charity and is a member of the ‘fun’draising arm for CHOC, the Cows.

IN her fundraising journey, Queensburgh resident Tatum Terblanche has raised more than R50 000 for The Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC).

This year, Tatum will again participate at the aQuellé Midmar Mile, recognised as the world’s largest open water swim event.

The 31-year-old will tackle the 8-Mile charity and is a member of the ‘fun’draising arm for CHOC, the Cows.

Training started last year, and Terblanche and two other CHOC stalwarts called ‘Team Udder Chaos’, have set a collective target of R30 000.

Last week they surpassed the R10 500 mark and with fewer than 15 days to go to the iconic event, Terblanche is confident of reaching their goal.

“I completed my first Midmar Mile in 2016 and it was during that swim that I noticed people in their Friesian-cow-patterned swimsuits. I learnt about the work that CHOC does in helping children diagnosed with cancer and their families, and I was hooked,” she explained.

“The training for this year’s event has been going well, I’ve mixed up my pool swims with a lot of open water swimming at the Durban Undersea Club (DUC). I’ve found open water training has helped me tremendously and while there are nerves for the 8-Mile charity swim, I’m looking forward to the challenge. I’m confident we will reach our overall fundraising goal and I’m so grateful to all those who’ve contributed already.”

Terblanche has also volunteered at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital cancer wards which has strengthened her mission to give back.

“When you see what these children go through, every other complaint or problem seems insignificant. Spending time and helping out in the cancer ward just gave me added purpose to my goal of doing anything I can to spread the word about CHOC. Volunteering at the cancer ward really brought home to me new meaning as to why I am a Cow,” she said.

She encouraged residents to join the Cows by visiting www.thecows.co.za/.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
