Kearsney bags triple win

Kearsney College demolished Clifton College in cricket and basketball and Pinetown Boys High School in basketball at the weekend.

KEARSNEY College enjoyed another succesful weekend of sport.

In cricket, Kearsney’s 1st XI played their first match of the current season at home on the Smith Oval and they did not disappoint, beating Clifton by 118 runs.

After winning the toss the home side had no hesitation in deciding to bat first on a flat track with a lightning outfield. Tristan Tedder and Ryan Wallace were in sublime form and put on 240 runs for the third wicket, as Kearsney amassed a formidable total of 303/3 after their allotted 50 overs. Tedder was eventually out for a superb 132 runs off 114 balls, while Wallace was 102 not out when the innings closed.

Despite a brisk start by Clifton, wickets fell regularly and James Tedder made it a family affair by achieving figures of 6/44 to restrict Clifton to 185 all out.

All in all a wonderful display of cricket by the Kearsney side to win their opening season’s fixture by 118 runs.

Kearsney College opened the fourth term basketball season on a high, winning both the double header fixtures they hosted against Pinetown Boys’ High School and Clifton College.

The first game against PBHS was a closely contested affair with neither team being able to pull away from the other. However the Kearsney full court defensive pressure proved too much for Pinetown, and during the end of the second quarter they were able to open up a gap. Pinetown had expended too much energy during the first half and Kearsney were able to finish off the game, with their bench playing a significant part of the second half. The final score was Kearsney 70-44 Pinetown.

Kearsney top scorers were Jeremy Maarschalk 15points 11 rebounds, Morena Malkona 11 points, Langa Mhlongo 8 points, Ntando Cele and Myles Lundall 7 points. PBHS top scorers were KG Cele 31 points and Zwe Khumalo 9 points.

The second match of the day saw Kearsney pitted against Clifton College, who always offer tough opposition. However this was not the case in a game which Kearsney dominated from the start and never took their foot off the accelerator. Clifton was not able to handle the defensive pressure put on them by the Kearsney team and did not put up much of a fight.

Although Kearsney were still missing a lot of open shots which the players should have been making, they shot well from behind the three point arc, making eight three pointers helping them consolidate their lead. The final score was Kearsney 83-23 Clifton.

Top Kearsney scorers were Myles Lundall 18 (6 three pointers), Morena Malakona 15, Jeremy Maarschal, Arnold Athuhari and Khayni Xaba 10 points. Clifton top scorers was Poswa 12, Faber 6.
