Irish dancer has all the luck

St Mary's pupil excels at SA Irish Dancing Championships held in Johannesburg.

KELSEY Le Roux, a grade 9 pupil from St Mary’s DSG, recently won her event at the SA Irish Dancing Championships held at Beaulieu College in Johannesburg.

There are various events held during the competition and the events are divided based on the dancers’ age and proficiency.

Kelsey and her fellow competitors had to perform two separate dances for their event and were judged on each dance respectively.

The results of the two performances were then tallied together in order to determine an over-all winner for the event.

The talented dancer, who won a gold medal for her first performance and a silver medal for her second performance, was awarded first place for her event.

Kelsey also competed in several individual performances at the championship and won two gold medals, a silver medal and a bronze medal.

She said she only started Irish dancing five years ago.

“I saw Lord of the Dance and told my mother that I wanted to start with Irish dancing. At first we struggled to find a teacher, but we finally found Bronwyn Parker from the Parker School of Celtic Dance, in Pinetown,” said Le Roux.

Le Roux perceives her dancing as a hobby, but hopes to compete internationally.

“There really is not enough opportunity to compete professionally, but I do enjoy dancing and it is a tremendous honour to compete and win,” said Le Roux.
