St Mary’s in nail-biting hockey final

St John's beat St Mary's in a gripping 8s challenge.

ST John’s beat St Mary’s in the final of the U16 hockey tournament hosted by St Mary’s DSG, after a a nail-biting 8-second challenge.

After the teams ended on a draw at full time in the final, the new 8-second challenge came into play where a player runs from the 25 metre line into the circle to take on the opposition keeper in a one on one battle. The player must score within the 8 seconds time limit.

This has taken over from the old penalty flick system to decide who the winner is between two teams who have drawn at the final whistle. Each team submits three players each of whom take on the opposition keeper.

The final results were:

1st: St Johns

2nd: St Marys 16A

3rd: St Marys 14A

4th: The Wykeham Collegiate

5th: Pietermaritzburg Girls High

6th: Durban Girls’ High School

7th: Danville

8th: Maris Stella

Prizes were awarded to Best Keeper: Nox Manele (GHS); Best Defender: Alexandra Mitchley (St Marys 16A); Best Midfielder: Tayla Putz (St Marys 16A) and Best Forward: Hannah Shirley (St Marys 14A).
