Three generations ‘pool’ together

If you're a fan of pool, make your way on down to the local pubs taking part in the National Blackball Federation Highway Pool League.

THREE generations share their deep love for the game of pool and form part of Chris’s Den Two pool team.

Eddie Irwin (76), Martyn Irwin (53) and Trystan Irwin (19) are three of the five members in the second team at the local pub. According to Eddie, the grandfather, he had been playing pool for about 40 years and started the sport as a pastime until the National Blackball Federation Highway Pool League began a few years ago.

“My son, Martyn, learnt to play through me and when his son was old enough, he introduced him to the game. Trystan started playing pool when he was just 12 years old,” said a proud Eddie.

Trystan said he was excited for the league to begin as he practices at home on his own pool table every chance that he gets. “It is quite exciting to be someone that younger, aspiring pool players can look up to. It is not every day that someone my age can just start playing pool,” said Trystan. “My dad played pool and when he went out for league nights, I couldn’t go along because I was too young. But when he thought I was old enough he invited me to join him one night and I remember watching him play a game of pool and knew I wanted to start as well.” He also said he would like to start playing professionally one day.

“I think it’s unheard of to have three generations taking part in one sport, forming part of one team for a whole year,” said Alan Bray, owner of Chris’s Den in Pinetown.

The league kicked off on Monday and games between the pubs in the area take place every Monday and alternate Tuesday evenings from 7pm. Visit www.cuespotter.com to view the log.
