A group of karate enthusiasts recently competed in the Africa Zone 6 Championships.
WESTVILLE’S karate superstars Shriya Misra, Akhil Rampersad, Riasha Singh and Zainab Khan all made a podium finish at the Africa Zone 6 Championships in Zambia recently.
The karate champs who practice the sport at the Westville Civic Centre, under the watchful eye of Protea coach Brando Pillay, represented team South Africa Proteas.
The annual African event attracted karate enthusiasts from eight Zone 6 countries: Zambia, South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Angola. According to the local karateka, these countries provided some tough competition.
“Our athletes from Westville were in top form as they had attended several coaching workshops at the Westville dojo,” said Protea coach Brando. “Their brilliant performance is what allowed them to all win medals.”
The Senior Ladies Champion and UKZN student, Shriya Misra, expressed her delight at winning a silver medal. “We did it for the Rainbow Nation,” said an ecstatic Shriya.
