TMC cyclists excel in Ireland
A team of five cyclists from Thomas More put the pedal to the metal during the Errigal International Youth cycle tour.
FIVE Thomas More College pupils recently represented the KZN Road Commission at the Errigal International Youth cycle tour in Ireland.
They were part of a 15 rider team that took part in the day event, which consisted of two road races on the narrow Irish roads, an individual time trial and a criterium race on the last day.
The racing was fast and aggressive, which was very different to the racing the riders were used to in South Africa. The team did exceptionally well and gained valuable experience from racing overseas and competing at an international level. They are already planning to attend a six-day cycle tour in Assen, which is in the Netherlands, in 2017.
The Thomas More riders did their school proud as Travis Stedman (Grade 8) achieved a 10th position overall in the U14 age group, followed by Mitchel Potgieter in 57th. In the U16 age group, Cian Leveridge (Grade 10) earned himself a hard fought 36th place. An unfortunate crash in the second road race ruined some great riding by Reece McCallum (Grade 8) who finished 78th. Tiffany Keep (Grade 10) won the Pink Jersey for 1st woman in the U16 category and finished 67th overall of the 96 riders.
