Zambians prove too strong for SA polocrosse team

Even though the U14 did not win their games against Zambia, the team is looking forward to its next match.

SUNNY yet cold and windy weather culminated in perfect conditions for the U14 Junior International Polocrosse Tournament final between South Africa and Zambia recently.

The tournament, hosted at the Paddock Polocrosse Club, saw a fairly young and inexperienced South African team being emphatically beaten by the older, more experienced Zambians.

South African captain, Jake Shaw, was injured during the second match on Saturday, but continued playing despite his injuries.

The Golden Pony award went to Cupcake, owned by South African, Lauren Heynes. Lauren (10), was the youngest player in the tournament but took home the award for the Best Girl Player.

Twelve-year-old Zambian, Daniel Mawson won the Best Boy Player award. He also won both the ‘best number 1’ position and the ‘best number 3’ position. Amorette Du Toit of Zambia, won the ‘best number 2’ position.

Sam Heynes, junior president of Polocrosse South Africa said, “I think the Zambians were just that much older than us.

“Team South Africa was a fairly young team, but our children did well. It was a great weekend overall and we look forward to playing this type of tournament annually.”

Ryan Pretorius, of the Paddock Polocrosse Club, said, “It’s the first time that our club hosted an international tournament. We look forward to hosting more international matches in the near future.”

He also congratulated the Zambians on their victory and both teams for their great effort and skill. He thanked the club’s management and members for their contributions to ensure the tournament was a success.
