Kearsney bounces a win at start of basketball season
Take a look at the school's weekend sports round up.
KEARSNEY College’s cricket season started with a T20 quadrangular against Northwood and Clifton on Saturday.
Kearsney beat Northwood by eight wickets.
The final scores were Northwood 1st X1: 105/9 (Heunis 3/15) and Kearsney 1st X1: 106/2 (McGrath 47).
Kearsney lost to Clifton by eight wickets.
The game ended with these scores, Kearsney 1st X1: 123/9 (De Vlieg 42) and Clifton 1st X1: 124/2.
Basketball
Kearsney’s basketball season got off to a successful start when they beat Clifton 48-7 at home.
With a number of players unavailable due to rugby-induced injuries, Clifton’s team was under strength and unable to hold off Kearsney’s initial onslaught, often looking like deer caught in headlights. Kearsney raced to a 31-1 first quarter lead, scoring easily and not allowing their opponents any easy shots.
Clifton fought back in the second quarter, when Kearsney substituted their starting players to give the bench an extended run.
The half-time score of 48-7 still looked ominous though.
The third quarter saw Clifton gifted some easy shots by poor Kearsney defence.
Clifton was quickly subdued, however, as they ran out of legs in the fourth quarter.
Kearsney played well and showed some excellent touches on offence, but are going to need to work hard on the defence’s communication and cohesion.
The team faces Maritzburg College this weekend, before the Independent Stayers Tournament where they are defending champions.
The top scorers for Kearsney were Levi Don Jeany (32 points, 13 rebounds), Ruben Darby (13 points, 9 steals), Loyiso Mabude (9 points, 5 rebounds), Rabasotho Lenko (8 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists), Liam Breytenbach (8 points).
The top scorer for Clifton was J Mahanga (10 points).
Canoeing
Kearsney’s canoeing team finished third in a slalom event in Pietermaritzburg at the weekend, maintaining their third position in the 2017 inter-schools league.
The college’s top four placings were: Matthew Goldie, Kevyn Meyer, Jack Lund and Thomas Painting.
