They had the wind in their sails at Sigma Series
The final leg of the Sigma Series will be held on Sunday, 11 February.
SAILORS who participated in the first day of the Sigma Series, hosted by Point Yacht Club, had a swell of a time in the gorgeous conditions offshore.
CFM took line honours in the racing fleet and Vernon Goss won on his yacht, Bellissima.
Race officer for the day, Greg Donkin, sent the fleet on a long haul north. The cruising class made their way to Virginia Beach while the faster fleet headed to uMhlanga.
Pat Boase, on CFM, had a near 10 minute lead on the second placed Gregg Hurter on Bellatrix. Gregg had Craig Millar, on Argo FY, on his shoulder for the first half of the return leg. Millar chose to head into some clean air and veered further offshore, a move that didn’t pay off. Gregg crossed the finish line with an 80 second lead on Craig.

In the one division L26s, Nhlanhla Phakathi led the entire race on Ithemba while Brendon Humphrey, not opting to fly his spinnaker, finished 13 minutes later.
Having a magnificent day offshore, the cruising class were sent towards the small craft airport with a buoy set 300m off Virginia Beach. Vernon Goss helmed Bellissima and took line honours.
Vernon opened up the gap after rounding the leeward mark and was neck-and-neck with Robin Hulley, skippering Mafuta. Hulley crossed the line two minutes after Bellissima.
Third place went to die-hard sailor, Neville Bransby on Ocean Spirit. He was just five minutes off the leader. Concluding the results for the cruising division was Miss Maverick who ventured offshore. With Tony Hardy on the wheel, the nifty yacht had great fun sliding up and down the massive swells that rolled in and only grew bigger as the day wore on.
The conclusion of the Sigma Series is on Sunday, 11 February.
On Saturday, 27 January, the dinghy sailors take to the water for the Bar Anniversary Mug Pursuit Race. Visitors are welcome.
