Winning start to football season for Westville
Westville Boy's High took on Kloof High School for the start of the football season.
WESTVILLE travelled to Kloof High School this weekend for the start of the football season and recorded their first win for the term.
Both teams started the game very conservatively, with equal possession and pressure from both sides.
There were few clear-cut chances in the opening quarter of the match, but Kloof had a degree of possession. Westville did manage to string a few passes together looking dangerous on the counter-attack.
The 1st half, which for the most part was a cagey affair, looked like it was going to end goalless, until Westville won the ball off the Kloof central midfielder and counter-attacked quickly with Ismail Zuma playing a wonderfully intricate pass through to Langa Manqoba, who whipped in an inviting cross which was met by a bullet header from Marcel Ganesh, the ball then nestling in the top left corner on the stroke of half time.
Westville went into the break 1-0 up.
In the second half Kloof again began dominating possession as Westville adopted a more defensive approach to cope with the attacking threat of Kloof. Kloof finally made the most of their possession and won a penalty after a handball in the penalty area.
The penalty was struck powerfully and was heading into the bottom left corner, but an unbelievably elastic save from Westville’s towering goalkeeper, Nthobeko Gcabashe thwarted Kloof’s hopes of an equaliser.
Moments later Westville capitalised on a lapse in concentration by Kloof’s defence, and a swift counter attack saw the ball put through to Marcel Ganesh who then coolly slotted his shot into the bottom corner, Westville now 2-0 up with 15 minutes to play.
Kloof retaliated with out all guns blazing for the remaining minutes. Westville 2-1 up with 9 minutes to play.
Westville were 2-1 winners of an entertaining and highly competitive football match.
