Talented triathlete takes second place

The Kearsney College learner has continued to rake in medals and top places this year.

IN a nail-biting finish, Josh Steytler (left) snapped up second place in the SA Champs Triathlon event male age category 14 to 16 at Suncoast in Durban recently.

The race comprised of an 800m swim, a 20km road ride and concluded with a 5km road run.

Josh, a Grade 11 learner at Kearsney College, said the event took place in pleasant conditions but rough sea conditions.

“Coming out 11th from the swim, I knew I had to cycle hard and give it my all to catch the top pack of riders. I came in first into transition after the bike, but battled with a cramp in my left leg,” he said.

After a quick leg massage, he slipped into his running shoes on and hit the road.

“I made up great time on the run, closing in all the time on my competitors. It all came down to the last 100m. I could see first place in front of me and gave it my all to end only coming in eight seconds behind first place. I claimed a podium finish with my first SA silver medal,” said the ecstatic teen.
