Kearsney claims double win
The local school's rugby and hockey teams both claimed deserved wins against Michaelhouse at the weekend.
Rugby:
Michaelhouse hosted Kearsney during its Founders’ Weekend in ideal Midlands playing conditions.
Kearsney started the match well and exerted pressure right from the start. Their first try came from a scrum against the feed as fullback Derick Marshall galloped 20m to score in the right-hand corner. Scrumhalf, Cade Carmichael, converted for a 7 – 0 lead after three minutes of play.
Kearsney continued their dominance and soon added another Carmichael penalty, after being called back from a disallowed try.
Kearsney laid the foundation with strong scrumming and mauling. The team’s hooker, Reid Stuart, had his name added to the score sheet after a line-out maul. Michaelhouse hardly saw the visitors’ half of the field but, in one rare occasion, slotted a penalty for their only points of the half. Kearsney added another Carmichael penalty for a deserved 18 – 3 half-time lead.
The second half saw the home team fight back what against a slightly over-confident Kearsney team. Michaelhouse scored with a pick-and-go from close out, after Kearsney failed to exit their half.
Kearsney then put together a passage of play reminiscent of their first half dominance and stretched the lead to 23 – 8.
Flyhalf, Moodie, collected the ball from his team’s bad overthrow in an attack lineout and forced his way through some uncharacteristic poor defence by the visitors. Highly motivated, and aided by some poor decision making by Kearsney, saw lock, Crampton, go over for a deserved converted try. The score-line was 20-23 to Kearsney.
With 12 minutes left on the clock, both teams produced some good passages of play. Michaelhouse’s winger, Khumalo, was prominent for his team and only desperate defence kept him at bay. Kearsney beat Michaelhouse 23 – 20.

Hockey:
Michaelhouse came out firing in the 1st chukka on their home turf in front of a big crowd. They scored two goals through their captain and controlled the entire 1st chukka.
In the 2nd chukka the hosts still had control of the game, but Kearsney started to find their feet and retain some possession.
Kearsney were a different team after halftime. They scored their 1st goal through a well-drilled penalty corner, and a few minutes later levelled the scores with a penalty stroke, both from Chase Kelly. With a few minutes left in the chukka, Kearsney found themselves ahead with a great finish from senior player, David Hudson.
The last chukka was an exciting 15 minutes of hockey, as both teams threw everything at each other. Michaelhouse had two good opportunities early on, but Kearsney scored through a counter attack. Kearsney beat Michaelhouse 4 – 2.
