WBHS 1st teams return home victorious

Special mention of the U16A Rugby team who went down narrowly in a tight encounter 22-28.

THE hockey boys got the ball rolling with a well-deserved 2-0 win.

After the first three chukkas with no scores on the board, it appeared that the two teams were evenly matched, both defending well to resist the attacks of their opponents. It was in the final chukka that the Westville boys took advantage of two creative opportunities for Josh Davies and Ethan Matkovitch to seal the match 2-0.

“The 1st rugby team overcame a tough challenge after finding themselves down 7-31 early in the 2nd half against a dominant Affies team. At that stage it certainly looked as if the Affies floodgates would open.

“However the Westville boys raised themselves into sixth gear, resisting onslaughts on their line and courageously charging down Affies clearances on four occasions which put the Affies boys on the back foot,” said 1st XV team assistant coach, Njabulo Zulu.

The travelling parents and players supported their team with every breath in their lungs, and at times it was easy to forget that this game was being played in Pretoria, at Affies.

“If one could bottle and forever live in the 10 to 15 minutes post the referee’s last whistle, it would be a fantastic thing.

Tears, hugs, laughter and overall, a deep deep joy. School sport has the ability to bring so much excitement and also the ability to extend past the education of the classroom,” said Zulu.

On Saturday in recording their maiden victory over Affies and coming back from a massive deficit, the Westville 1st team rugby boys taught and inspired their fellow school mates of the worth and beauty of resilience. The worth and beauty of belief and triumphing against all odds.

The worth and beauty of unity through a common goal and dream.

It would be unfair to highlight players in what was an impressive team effort from Westville. However for the record the five tries were scored by captain Gareth Beavan, Braden van Wyk and Simelela Nkomo with Okuhle Siyeni scoring two.

Grove Akker confidently converted all five tries.

Special mention should also be made of the U16A Rugby team who went down narrowly in a tight encounter 22-28.
