Local MTB riders embrace whirlwind start

Martin Dreyer’s RMB Change a Life team has continued to grow in its success this year.

MBONENI Ngcobo, a member of Martin Dreyer’s RMB Change a Life team, claimed second place in the aQuellé Tour Durban Cyclocross race recently.

Cayde Muldoon scooped up the win in the Durban event in a thrilling end-sprint.

Mboneni’s podium place will serve as another highlight of the team’s whirlwind start to 2019, after their memorable impact on the Absa Cape Epic in March.

Two team entries were offered to the group and were given to Sipho Kupiso and Bongumusa Zikhali as well as Ndumiso Dontso and Mazwi Smimango.

At the eleventh hour, Martin was able to add a third team to the Epic line-up when Land Rover made a team entry available to him. The spots were assigned to Sthembiso Masango and Mboneni Ngcobo.

“The Absa Cape Epic is doing incredible work promoting development mountain biking, giving black cyclists who financially could never afford it a riding experience of a life time,” said the academy’s founder, Martin Dreyer. “There are numerous strong young development teams and the competition between the teams for the U27 age group Exxaro Jersey was very competitive.”

Sipho and Bongumusa finished fifth in their category. The other two Change a Life teams put in phenomenal performances and placed 1st and 2nd overall among the highly competitive development racing teams.

Sthembiso and Mboneni, arguably the most experienced Change a Life riders, finished in 56th place overall while Ndumiso and Mazwi ended the gruelling event in 71st place.

“We are very grateful to Land Rover for sponsoring one of my Change a Life teams and the guys were in awe of the hospitality they received,” said Martin.
