Villagers narrowly lose to WOB

The Upper Highway team picked up their game during the second half but narrowly missed a win by a few points.

THE Land Rover Durban – Hillcrest Villagers’ Rugby Club played their arch rivals, the Westville Old Boys’ Rugby Club, on Saturday at the Jimmy Bellows Sports Grounds, in a festival of attractive hard fought First Division Club Rugby.

There was a huge turnout of spectators for both sides, with some high ranking KZNRU club officials in attendance.

In the 2nd XV match, the Villagers spent much of the match on the backfoot against a well-drilled WOB side, however in the last 10 minutes Hillcrest pushed hard to try and achieve the impossible.

It was ultimately a bridge too far, and the home side won 42-19. Man of the Match went to Henkie Groenewald (backline) and Bradly Cohen (forwards).

The 1st XV match provided a spectacle of clean, hard and brutal confrontational rugby. Westville struck early and built on their lead. The sheer brutality of the encounter saw the Villagers lose their hooker early on, with a serious gash to the forehead. After a serious chat at half time from head coach, Mike de Kock, the re-energised Hillcrest side staged a tough comeback in the final 30 minutes.

The visitors fell short by two points, with a 22 – 24 loss to WOB.

Man of the Match went to Kyle Spowart (forwards) and JP van der Westhuizen (backline).

The Turaco/Envirosan Hillcrest Villagers 3rd XV were handed a walkover in their scheduled fixture against Ogwini Bafana at the SJ Smith Hostel in Lamontville.

All three sides have a bye this weekend.
