Westville dojo rakes in gold

Twenty karateka from the Westville Karate Club claimed podium finishes in their respective classes recently.

THE Westville Karate Club recently participated in the IFFSKSA 26th Friendship All-Style Championship at the Old Mutual Sports Centre at UKZN’s Howard Campus.

There were 400 entries and 20 avid students from the Westville club signed up to compete.

The club’s instructor, Sensei Brian Govender, said he was pleased with the performance of each student who represented his dojo.

Monica Bodalia (1st kata and 1st kumite), Yasthika Narainsamy (1st kata and 1st kumite), Sajel Brijlal (2nd kata and 1st kumite), Ziphiwo Hlongwa, Ashley Thomas (1st kata and 2nd kumite), Payden Ayer (2nd kumite), Aman Nadvi, Vitara Ayer (2nd kata and 1st kumite), Tarita Bodalia (3rd for kata and kumite), Talin Bodalia (1st kata 1st and 3rd kumite), Ronaldo Moodaly (1st kumite), Maxim Barnes (3rd kata), Michael Schwartz (1st kumite and 2nd kata) and Kezia Mae Naidoo (3rd kata, 3rd kumite).

“Thank you to my assistant instructors, Sensei Mishelle Govender and Sensei Shalin Samlall, for all their hard work that they put into getting the students ready for the championship,” said Govender.
