Senior citizens receive early Christmas gifts

Keep it clean it's your city

ETHEKWINI Mayor, James Nxumalo, had to postpone the handover of 10 houses to Clermont families who live in poor conditions, to attend the launch of Operation Phakisa.

This event was to celebrate the month of senior citizens. The programme continued as planned with a cleaning campaign and 60 families were given food parcels.

People who were to get keys for new houses and those who were to receive food parcels were identified through Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS), a programme aimed at assisting poor members of society who need urgent government intervention.

On the beneficiaries list was an elderly woman whose home was destroyed during a fire. She has been living in extremely unpleasant conditions with her grandchildren, one of whom is disabled.

The municipal officials, including Ward 18 PR councillor, Nellie Nyanisa, then joined volunteers and community members for a clean up in Vezunyawo, Clermont. After the clean up session, people then proceeded to the Clermont Community Hall where the food parcel handover took place.

The Department of Social Development and non-government organisations were available to offer their services to senior citizens.

The senior citizens could not express their gratitude in words, but their smiles showed their appreciation for the food parcels and social assistance. Nyanisa, who represented the mayor at this event, spoke to the elders and told them how important they are to this country.

An emotional Stomoza Zondi said she does not have words to express her gratitude.

“Whoever thought today I would have a proper meal to serve my grandchildren?

“I have never seen such a huge food parcel in my life. I thank the mayor for remembering the elders of Clermont today,” said Zondi.
