Cape Vidal – A rare beach and bush destination

This reserve is home to a healthy wildlife population, including elephant, rhino, buffalo, crocodile, hippo and reedbuck.

Cape Vidal lies on the eastern shores of a pristine marine reserve which forms part of the Isimangaliso Wetland Park: a UNESCO world heritage site. The 358 534 hectare Isimangaliso Wetland Park encompasses three major lake systems, Africa’s largest estuarine system, a swamp area, and some of the highest coastal dunes in the world.

The St Lucia estuary is home to South Africa’s largest population of hippos and crocodiles and there are as many as 530 bird species to be seen in the Wetland Park. Cape Vidal is where bush and beach come together, offering a rare experience of both land and beach activities.

Entering the Eastern Shores gate, one travels through a protected nature reserve before reaching Cape Vidal. This reserve is home to a healthy wildlife population, including elephant, rhino, buffalo, crocodile, hippo and reedbuck. Six loop roads offer excellent game viewing and bird watching opportunities, whilst a crocodile centre offers feeding shows on weekends for visitors to enjoy.
The shores of Cape Vidal see Humpback whales migrate from the north, followed by game fish such as marlin and sailfish. During the months of November to February, Cape Vidal becomes a breeding ground for endangered loggerhead and leatherback turtles who lay their eggs in the sand. Turtle tours are available from November to January.

This protected beach is a wonderful place to enjoy snorkelling amongst , swimming, surfing, and fishing – with plenty of great spots for rock and surf angling. There is kilometers of unspoilt beaches which are great for nice long walks.The water is crystal clear and there are some incredible reefs that offer sanctuary to a number of marine species.

Within view of the beach is the Cape Vidal Resort which offers camping sites and comfortable self-catering log cabins. There are 4-sleeper and 6-sleeper log cabins available at the Cape Vidal resort, each featuring two or three bedrooms, an en-suite bathroom with a shower, a fully-equipped kitchenette, and a lounge area. Forty-five campsites nestle in the dune forest near the beach, each with a electrical plug point and access to a well equipped kitchen and ablutions with hot and cold water, showers, and baths.

The Cape Vidal Resort also has a petrol station, small shop, and curio shop conveniently located for guests to utilize.
