Hike in electricity will lead to more poverty

The recent increase in the cost of electricity is bound to lead to increased poverty, especially for the poor and the unemployed.

For the unemployed and the elderly, life is going to be an uphill battle as they all struggle to meet the high cost of living.

Sad about this is that it is not only the high cost of electricity that is bound to weigh heavy on their pockets but the increasing cost of basic food, petrol and the likely rise in travel costs.

Not only is the high cost of living bad for the poor and the unemployed, but it is also one of the main reasons crime has escalated to such unimaginable proportions. And when people are affected by poverty, it is easy for many to opt for criminality to survive.

And with the state of the national police in the way it is now and scores of our police officers and their leaders no longer trustworthy, the poor and the elderly are definitely in for a very high jump as they are left to fend for themselves.

The rest of us can only hope and pray that what has befallen the poor and the aged will only be changed by divine intervention at the polls on May 29.
