Join new mental health support group in Kempton

Support groups provide a safe space to connect, learn and share from others who have been through similar experiences.

A new depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder support group in Kempton Park will have its first meeting on August 31 at 1pm.

The meeting will take place at the NG Church Bonaero Park, 32 Malpensa Avenue, Bonaero Park. This free support group offers anyone living with mental illness, as well as their partners, a place of warmth, understanding and support.

“I know there is hope after depression and one can live a successful life with any mental health issue such as depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder. I would like to encourage others to seek help and provide a message of hope to others,” says support group leader Heidi Delport.

Support groups provide a safe space to connect, learn and share from others who have been through similar experiences. It also helps break the stigma and shame associated with mental health and helps people cope better every day.

Guest speakers and experts in the field of psychology will at times give talks to the group. Groups discuss effective ways of managing symptoms, self-help tips and how to help a loved one with their mental illness.

To attend this group, call The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) on 0800 456 789 or Heidi on 079 687 9158.

This group is one of many run by Sadag, a non-profit organisation striving to educate patients, families, professionals and the general public on the nature and management of mental illnesses.

Sadag support groups are run either by members who are living with a mental illness or by professionals in the community. These groups allow members the opportunity to form connections with others experiencing similar troubles and to learn from one another in a non-judgmental, confidential atmosphere.
