Public protector visits Tembisa

Community issues make public protector cry

Public Protector adv. Busisiwe Mkhwebane almost broke down in tears after listening to the community’s grievances.

Mkhwebane was in Tembisa on August 21 as part of her annual roadshow, where she interacts with the members of the public, registers their problems and helps them resolve some of their grievances.

“These issues are both sad and touching at the same time, but I want to assure you that we will do our best to investigate where we can and find the solutions to your problems and challenges,” she said.

“Our focus is clear and it dictates us to meet and engage with you. We are not here as police but to help strengthen our democracy and act as mediators. And we are here to offer solutions. We are here for you because you do not have the power and resources to challenge those in state powers, but we have the mandate and all the resources to help you.

“Once you have registered your complaints with us we are able to investigate and come up with corrective measures.

“I want to encourage you to report any form of abuse of power by government officials and departments,” she said.

Mkhwebane also used the platform to celebrate and honour women, stating that they are the pillars of the country.

“I would like to applaud all women who are serving in various positions of power and influence. I can never leave out all the women out there who are doing anything and everything to keep the fires burning and provide for their families.

“Women play an important role in society, which means if we are to drop the ball the country would collapse. If our boy children grow up to be violent and abusive it means that we as women are not doing enough to train them to be better men,” said Mkhwebane.

Mkhwebane, who was joined by the City of Ekurhuleni executive mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina and his mayoral committee, helped resolve some of the community members’ concerns.
