Looters in Norkem Park throw stones at police

The fleeing criminals escaped through Mooifontein Cemetery.

Stones were thrown at Norkem Park SAPS and metro police officers by about 300 looters in Norkem Park on Monday evening.

According to Sgt Johanna Madiga, spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS, the incident occurred around 8pm when a shop on the corner of Tortelduif and Storms streets was looted.

“The mob broke open the doors of the foreign-owned shop and damaged and looted groceries,” said Madiga.

“Upon arrival of police, the mob threw stones at officers and ran from the scene into Mooifontein Cemetery, seemingly making their way to Vusimuzi in Tembisa.”

No arrests were made and the foreign nationals were not injured. They were assisted by members from Norkem Park CPF, Sec Pros, Target, ADT, MML, Alpha, Black Ops and various other first responders.

“Danie Marais from Norkem CPF asked that we all meet at Norkem Park SAPS. The team went to the scene and helped to secure the scene,” said Sec Pros’ Gerald Groenewald.

“The shop owners brought vehicles to remove what was left of their stock. Rubber bullets were fired as some of the looters who were spotted in a nearby veld. No injuries were reported.”

Earlier on Monday morning, Kempton Park SAPS advised shops on West Street in Kempton Park CBD to close due to threats of a group of people having boarded a train to Kempton Park.

It is unclear where the people would be travelling from but for safety reasons police monitored the situation.
