Tembisa calmer but foreign-owned shops still closed

Eight people have been arrested and charged with public violence.

The riots that started yesterday in most sections of Tembisa have now died down, but foreign-owned shops remains closed.

The police ministry has since deployed and strengthened police presence in the area.

The City of Ekurhuleni waste management unit was seen busy cleaning and clearing rubbles and rocks which were used to barricade the roads during the day-long unrests.

During the unrests a number of foreign-owned outlets were broken into and looted. Surprisingly, this time around, a few locally-owned shops were also looted and damaged.

Eight people have been arrested and charged with public violence.

Police spokesperson Kay Makubele confirmed the arrest and said the suspects will soon appear before the magistrate’s court.

“We have been monitoring the situation since the early hours of the morning and people were looting the shops. Police later arrested eight suspects for public violence,” he said.
