Over 100 Tembisa learners transported to hospital with itchy skin

The incident is under investigation.

On August 30, Isiziba Primary School in Tembisa learners started complaining to teachers of itchy skin.

Spokesperson of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Eric Maloka said the teachers sought help from the EMS service centre across the street.

“We received a call about children with food poisoning or pollen infection. One hundred and seventeen learners were transported to different medical facilities. About fifty learners were transported to Tembisa Hospital and others were taken to the nearest clinics,” said Maloka.

He said the children were in a stable condition and at the time they could not figure out what the cause was. The incident is under investigation.

Maloka said police and the Department of Health also responded to the call and swiftly arrived at the school. According to him the symptom the children was showing was itchy skin and many started to scratch themselves.

He said when their first ambulance arrived more assistance was called because of the magnitude of the problem.

“We had about six or seven ambulances and three from provincial,” said Maloka.
