Abandoned stolen vehicle causes traffic havoc on R21

Reports of a CIT heist are not true

Ekurhuleni Metro Police refuted claims that a cash-in-transit heist or attempted truck hijacking occurred on the R21 earlier on Thursday afternoon.

Messages on social media also suggested there was a recovery of a hijacked truck.

“We are not aware of any of such incidents. What we know is there was a white Mercedes Benz found abandoned on Voortrekker Road just after the off-ramp,” said Kobedi Mokheseng, metro police spokesperson.

“The vehicle had a flat tyre and when police officers stopped to check the vehicle, they discovered there was no one inside. They checked the registration number on the system which was when they discovered it was a stolen vehicle.

“That is what might have caused traffic jams on the highway and we assisted with traffic control.”

Traffic was flowing again at 2.30pm.
