Allen Grove great-grandmother turns 102
On her 100th birthday, Eileen received a birthday card signed by Queen Elizabeth II.
Born in the United Kingdom, Eileen Freed from Allen Grove turned 102 on August 29.
Eileen was born in a small village called Old Basing, Hampshire, in England in 1917.
Her daughter-in-law Helen Freed told Express: “She witnessed the first cars that had been launched and the first planes taking off, the development of technology, such as television and has lived through both world wars.”
Eileen came to Africa in 1948 on a ship called Athlone Castle with her three young children Robin, Malcolm and Tessa.
Her children wrote a poem in her honour, saying: “Born in Old Basing, UK, you travelled. Now time has passed, the years have flown and for many generations Africa is home.
“We have one special treasure, kind and true. No other friend in all the world will be the same as you.”
On her 100th birthday in 2017, Freed received a royal birthday card from the Queen of England, Elizabeth II, that stated: “I am so pleased to know that you are celebrating your 100th birthday. I send my congratulations and best wishes.”
The card was also signed by the queen.
Freed has the sparkling sweetness of a teenager, especially in the way she told her son: “I love you”.
