Rotarians build imagination stations at Tembisa ECD centre

Chartered in 2017, Midrand NexGen Rotary Club is filled with enthusiastic Rotarians looking to make a difference in the Midrand community and create lasting change.
These Rotarians collaborated with the Mall of Africa over the festive season last year to raise funds for local causes in need. One of these causes were identified as the Sihlangene ECD Forum, who assists 300 early childhood development (ECD) centres housing over 1 000 children in Tembisa.
Mispah Carelsen, club marketing chairperson, said when Sihlangene ECD Forum approached them with their wish list, they mentioned the need to enable imaginative play, and the idea for the Imagination Stations were born.
“From May to July, NexGenners came together to build four Kitchen and two Workbench Imagination Stations from recycled wooden pallets, with plans to build more,” said Carelsen.

“We also gathered donations of tea sets, kitchen utensils, baking goods, and tools to stock the stations with. Much fun and fellowship was had in building the stations, as well as painting and decorating them for the children.
“On Mandela Day, our club handed the Imagination Stations over to the Sihlangene Forum in Ivory Park, where some of the children from the various surrounding crèches were able to test the stations out. According to our ‘testers’, the Imagination Stations were a hit,” said Carelsen.
“Building as many Imagination Stations as we can for this worthy cause will continue to be an ongoing project for the Midrand NexGen Rotary Club. As stated by O Fred Donaldson: ‘Children learn as they play’,” said Pieter Karsten, president of Midrand NexGen Rotary Club.
