In one incident in September 2021, the victim attended her mother’s birthday celebration, where family and friends gathered.

Due to limited space at the family home, arrangements were made for her to sleep at her uncle’s residence.

It was during this visit that the accused allegedly raped her after leaving the family gathering and returning to his home.

A further incident occurred on May 18, 2022, when the accused again allegedly raped the victim at his residence.

The case was reported at Ivory Park SAPS and assigned to Detective Warrant Officer William Maela of the Tembisa Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela, the investigation led by Warrant Officer Maela resulted in the accused being found guilty and sentenced to two life terms of imprisonment by the Thembisa Magistrate’s Court on March 24.

Ekurhuleni acting district commissioner Brigadier David Ngcobo welcomed the successful finalisation of the case and commended the investigating officer for his work in ensuring justice for the victim.

He said the outcome reflects ongoing efforts by law enforcement to protect victims of gender-based violence and sexual offences across the district.
