Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival: Mixed bag of results for Monnas

Monnas celebrated the Easter weekend with a victory and a loss at the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival.

Hoërskool Monument High (Monnas) had mixed fortunes at this year’s Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival.

Monnas’ Wit Bulle did not compete on the first day of the tournament but boasts of one victory and one loss in total. The 2024 festival showcased 14 highly-rated first XV high school teams, as well as an inaugural primary schools’ festival, over the three play days on March 28, March 30 and April 1.

Springbok legend Frans Steyn, Andy Capastagno and another Springbok old boy Stefan Terblanche.

Also present at the tournament were big-name Springbok rugby players such as Frans Steyn (two-time Rugby World Cup winner) and Stefan Terblanche as well as famous rugby commentator Andy Capostagno.

Regarding the action on the field and during the second day of the tournament, the weather was warm and sunny … quintessential for a Monnas victory.

Their opponents were Hoërskool Framesby from Port Elizabeth and despite a slow start to the match, Monnas found a way. For starters, Geoffrey French scored one try but the tide turned in Monnas’ favour when flyer Ernesto Oersen scored two tries out of the blue. They eventually led the game and held on for a 22–17 win.

Unfortunately, on the final day, Monnas was defeated 25–22 by Westville Boys High from KZN. Here Monnas had lots of catching up to do already trailing 15–0 at halftime. Although they did claw their back they fell short by just three points as the final whistle blew.
