Police are still searching for a gang of robbers who wounded three members of the public during a shootout at the Kagiso Mall on 31 May at about 10.30am.
Captain Mosotho Phaahla, a police spokesperson says a money van was delivering money to one of the banks at the mall.
“When the security guard carrying the money entered the bank, one of the armed suspects tried to rob him. The guard shot the suspect as his life and those of the public were endangered.”
A shootout ensued when another suspect fired at the guard but instead wounded three members from the community.
“The suspect managed to flee from the scene.”
Paramedics were called to the scene and upon their arrival they found that a man had succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead.
Vanessa Jackson, ER24 media spokesperson says a woman was transported to hospital by ambulance after she suffered serious wounds during the incident. Two other men had suffered minor injuries and they too were taken to hospital by ambulance.
Phaahla says they seized the 9mm firearm the suspect had, which allegedly was stolen as the serial number was missing.
The police opened a case of armed robbery. The security guard who shot and killed the suspect will not be charged as he did it in self-defence, says Phaahla.
