Gauteng MEC of Community Safety Nonhlanhla Mazibuko paid a visit to Kagiso to declare war on drug dealers and addicts in and around Krugersdorp.
Mazibuko was escorted to the township of Kagiso by the Krugersdorp police cluster and their CPF (community police forum) counterparts as well as the Gauteng Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane, in her quest to curb of the ever growing Nyaope drug problem in the area.
The drug Nyaope has become the talk of the town not only in Kagiso, but nationally after the self-confessed drug addict, Issac Molotsi (23) recently made headlines about his plea to the nation to help him quit the drug.
The visit to Kagiso saw five additional addicts come forward to plead with the MEC for help with their addictions.
A week later on 13 June the office of the MEC also organised an operation with the police to clean the streets of Kagiso of drugs, especially an area called Bankok, considered to be a hotspot for Nyaope dealers and users.
The clean-up operation by members of the SAPS lasted for six hours and saw a total of eight suspects arrested.
Two suspects were charged with dealing in dagga and the other six for possession of Nyaope and Dagga.
“Members of the community watched with joy as the police and patrollers took charge of the streets, conducting stop and search tactics as well as searching street vendors’ shelters,” says spokesperson for the Kagiso SAPS, Solomon Sibiya.
Police also arrested a 31-year-old woman at the Madala hostel for dealing in dagga.
The amount of dagga found on her weighed 9,862 kg and was found hidden in the suspect’s room.
Two other suspects aged 28 and 30 were also arrested for possession of dagga.
“The clean-up operation will continue as long as there is a drug problem in Kagiso.”
The police will continue with the fight against drug abuse to ensure that the suppliers or dealers leave our communities.
“The operations are far from over, we are just getting started.”
