Baby boy dies in house fire
The father of the boy sustained serious burn wounds after running into the house to save his son's life.
A baby boy who would have been one year old in September tragically died after a rented two bedroom garden cottage caught alight on Thursday 8 August in Bodenstein Street, Krugersdorp North.
The father, André Loggenberg, his wife and two-year-old daughter were also injured.
Loggenberg was admitted to the intensive care unit at a local hospital as he sustained serious burn wounds after allegedly running into the cottage to save his boy’s life.
Eddie Crause, a member of the family who regards Loggenberg as his son, says that all of their belongings were destroyed in the fire and that the family’s car also got damaged.
“The community has really been so helpful. They have shown so much care.”
He says that money was collected and will go towards the boy’s funeral.
“We have received donations from people as far as Klerksdorp in the North West province.”
Crause says that the family is still very much in need.
“At this moment we are looking for a place where they can stay.”
The owner of the property who was not at the premises at the time of the incident as he is operating a business from the premises says that he is also not sure how the fire started and that it will be the subject of an investigation by the fire department.
“I was contacted and told that the place is burning. Immediate neighbours came and tried to stop the fire but it was too late to salvage anything.”
He says the fire department took some time to arrive at the premises.
“After I arrived everything in the cottage was burnt to ashes and the community took the injured to hospital.”
He says he has empathy for the victims as it is not easy being in a situation like this.
He also confirmed that the building is insured.
