Oldest school in town celebrates 112 years
Tons of cupcakes, balloons and musical entertainment were organised to celebrate this achievement.
Krugersdorp Town School (KTS) is Krugersdorp’s oldest school and to celebrate its 112th years of existence on 15 July, tons of cupcakes, balloons and musical entertainment were organised.
The new Afrikaans country duo Jeanette van Staden and Henk Dercksen from Heuning entertained the children with their music, Elvis Presley impressions and dance moves.
The history of KTS is the story of school education in Krugersdorp. Although initially aimed at the English-speaking population of the town, it now has become a culturally vibrant and dynamic school. It is open to children from a variety of backgrounds although the medium of education has remained English.
The school opened its doors on 4 June 1901 and was housed in various old buildings and sheds, among which was the old Temperance Hall.
In 1904 KTS moved to Mr Human’s store in Commissioner Street before moving to a building at the corner of Commissioner and Fountain Street the following year, where it was opened officially by the then mayor.
The school remained in these buildings until December 1946 when it was relocated to the old Krugersdorp High School buildings in Human Street.
On 9 September 1986 the pupils again moved to the new premises at the corner of Gerrie Visser and Buiten Streets, where it still stands.
The history of KTS as the oldest school in Krugersdorp is bound to the story of education in the town and is intricately bound to the town’s identity and the identity of its inhabitants.
As a school it still stands central to the life and development of Krugersdorp and its people.
This year’s celebrations are to honour all the former pupils and teachers who made the school what it is today.
