Hospital staff stage demonstrations

Angry staff members demand that the hospital management need to pull up their socks.

The Yusuf Dadoo Hospital in Krugersdorp was in turmoil as angry staff staged demonstrations during lunchtimes from 9 until 13 September.

According to a press statement by Jack Bloom, the Democratic Alliance Gauteng Health spokesperson, the staff members claim that there have been irregular management appointments, that certain tenders were corrupt and issues such as equipment shortages have not been addressed.

Some of the grievances staff members had were that the hospital appointed incompetent managers, the broken switchboard kept dropping calls, patients sometimes slept on the floor because of a bed shortage, a contractor failed to complete the construction of the nurses residence and an electronic information board was left unfinished by a contractor.

Bloom says the staff that have picketed include doctors, nurses and National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) members.

“The Gauteng Health Department has been slow to address the problems at this hospital. Urgent intervention is needed to address what I believe are valid grievances.”

The NEWS went to the hospital on Monday 16 September to see if staff members were still picketing, but it seemed that they might have come to some agreement.

A request for comment was sent to the hospital, but nothing was forthcoming by the time of going to print.
