Armed robbers take cellphone batteries

One suspect was arrested and another got away after attempting to rob a cellphone shop.

An alleged plan to empty a Lewisham cellphone shop during a robbery went slightly wrong for two armed suspects on Tuesday 24 September.

According to Krugersdorp SAPS spokesperson Constable Tshepiso Mashale two men entered the shop under the pretence of wanting to buy cellphone accessories.

“One of the men then pulled out a firearm from underneath his clothes, causing the shop assistant to scream for help,” says Mashale.

Unaware that someone was at work in the back of the shop, the robbers were deterred when another employee rushed to see where the call for help was coming from.

“The suspects then ran away, taking cellphone batteries only.

“Police were alerted immediately and given a description of the suspects. This enabled them to apprehend one of the suspects – a 28-year-old male – shortly afterwards,” says Mashale.

The suspect appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court on a charge of business robbery.

Investigating Officer Constable Glen Mothopi at the Krugersdorp Detective Unit is looking for the second suspect.
