Parents to be sentenced

A man and his partner are expected to be sentenced by the South Gauteng High Court in the Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court in Alberton today.

Adriaan Netto and his 34-year-old lover, whose identity can not be made public to protect the identity of their other children, have been found guilty of culpable homicide, rape and abuse of their ten-month-old baby girl on 18 September.

The court judgement would have been handed down on 12 September but Netto disappeared. He was re-arrested five days later in Sivewright Street, Krugersdorp.

When delivering the verdict, Judge Majeke Mabesele said that the State was unable to prove that the couple murdered the little girl but that the abuse and neglect the child suffered while in their care made them culpable for her death.

The results of the post mortem show that the baby had multiple injuries and was underweight. One of her lungs was filled with blood and she had several fractured ribs as well as abrasions on her private parts and face. Bruises were found on her abdomen and her liver was damaged as a result of repeated anal penetration.
