Two major cyber scams trending in Krugersdorp

Don't be a victim of these scams.

Lieutenant Colonel Jacobus van Staden from the Krugersdorp Detectives Unit is urging the public to be aware of Cyber-criminal activity in and around Krugersdorp.

He warns against two major cyber scams currently doing the rounds:

Misleading online and printed competitions

“No establishment will ever pay for competition entries,” says Van Staden.

He warns that scamsters mainly mislead elderly people on sms, email and printed advertisements reading ‘Congratulations your cell phone number has been selected to win cash and you must contact a person to claim your money’.

He warns that a deposit will be demanded to claim the so called prize and that victims will not be able to retrieve the stolen money.

Online and cell phone dating

He warns residents interested in cyber dating to not share too much personal information with potential companions.

He also warns not to arrange meetings at unknown places or transfer money to pay for promised visits.

Many people have been victims of these scams and the SAPS warns residents to be extra aware when interacting online.
