Relay proves that cancer can be conquered

Relay for Life attracts large crowd in Krugersdorp.

More than 1 300 attendees gathered at Hoërskool Monument on 1 November, uniting against the stigmas attached to the Big C – cancer.

The atmosphere was almost tangible as men, women and children arrived for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) West Rand’s annual Relay for Life event in an effort to inspire, get inspired, overcome and share stories of victory.

Cansa West Gauteng Regional Manager Ronel Vermaak says that the West Rand is known for large turnouts at their Relay events.

“Relay For Life is a recognisable brand worldwide, with 20 countries celebrating the lives saved from cancer, remembering those lost and those fighting back. On the West Rand we make it a unique event,” she says.

She explains that Relay for Life teams consist of 10 to 15 members who take turns to walk or run around a track for 12 to 24 hours as they did on the sports field of the school.

“The goal is to keep one team member on the track at all times, as cancer never sleeps.”

This year Krugersdorp teams showed some spirit by dressing up, colouring their hair and wearing T-shirts with motivational slogans.

One of the highlights of the event, which started at 6pm and concluded at 6am the next day, is always the victory lap during which cancer survivors walk around the track.

“This symbolises the treatment they have completed and their victory afterwards,” explains Ronel.

“The caregiver lap is another part of the programme that sweeps up the crowd,” she says explaining that those who take care of cancer patients also get recognised during the relay.

Ronel invites Krugersdorp resident to take part in other Cansa-organised events, like the Cuppa for Cancer and Shave-a-thon events.
