Silverstar’s new development takes shape
The new facilities create an interactive environment that supports entertainment as well as dining opportunities suited to all.
Over the past few months Silverstar, a Tsogo Sun property, has seen its redevelopment start taking shape. The anticipated date of full completion is September 2014 and the work is on track.
“The new development incorporates a host of family entertainment facilities that will appeal to the residents of Johannesburg’s West Rand,” says Shane Collinson, Director of Operations and Complex General Manager at Silverstar.
To achieve something for everyone, a variety of offerings had to be incorporated into the development.
“We realised that our customers enjoy spending time outdoors and to make full use of this, the concept and our spectacular location, an outdoor square or public space is being introduced,” he says.
When completed, the new-look Silverstar will boast a central village square with a large outdoor screen where Boktown matches will be screened, as well as a bar and beer garden adjacent to the square. The unique beer garden opens up to a terrace for casual family dining. Here live bands will perform and outdoor barbeques will tantalise the taste buds.
The new facilities create an interactive environment that supports entertainment as well as dining opportunities suited to all, including families. One such highlight that will take effect as early as January 2014, will be the opening of Billy G’s – an upmarket buffet family restaurant that features a variety of hot and cold starters, main courses and desserts.
“The overall architectural concept of the development revolves around the creation of a mix of dining and lounge experiences on terraces and in courtyards, pavilions and outdoor rooms. The design is aimed at reinforcing the international trend of cafe and bistro style dining and the growing trend to dine alfresco,” says Pierre van Wyk, architect and director at Northpoint.
Various alcoves along the square will provide informal seating and play opportunities for children. Fans of the musical fountain will be delighted to know that the beauty of the fountain is not all lost.
“The fountain’s size has been reduced, but it now offers an interactive feature to keep the children entertained,” says Collinson.
The development is not simply about aesthetics, but creates a total experience for the family. “We are increasing the crèche area, including a gaming arcade and will have six cinemas and a 12-lane bowling alley all under one roof,” enthuses Collinson.
Aside from their love of food, South Africans are well known for their love of sport and to this end the big outdoor screen will feature major sporting events including Silverstar’s Boktown rugby screenings.
“The screen forms part of the open square, which will feature a stage capable of accommodating music performers, fashion shows and even theatre productions for children,” says Collinson.
The development brings Silverstar into the open air with an array of family-friendly leisure, entertainment and dining facilities to choose from. Additionally, the entire gaming floor and internal complex will be refreshed aesthetically in early 2014 to complement and bring together the theme of the re-development.
“Apart from these developments taking place for the benefit of our guests, we hope that they will empower the community of the West Rand through job creation,” Collinson concludes.
While the development is being completed, Silverstar is open for business as usual. On 15 November South Africa’s ‘cousin’ Barry Hilton will have everyone in stitches while local duo Die Campbells will wow audiences with their unique sound on 23 November.
