Store in Monument robbed of money

Five men stormed into the store and demanded money and valuables.

“Money, money, money!”

With these words five men in blue overalls wearing thick garden gloves stormed into the Viva Supa-Save in Monument on 16 November and robbed the store of an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing in a car they carjacked from the owners’ son.

Ann Bellas (62) the co-owner who was in the shop at the time of the robbery with her son John (38) and a customer, says before the incident one of the suspects bought three sweets before returning to a white bakkie carrying garden service equipment.

“He and four men returned. They closed the door of the store and demanded that we give them the money and our valuables while pointing a firearm at us.”

She says they have taken her wrist watch and her son’s wallet, iPhone and the keys to his black Audi with registration number TLB 717 GP.

“My son who is studying to be a doctor and who will be doing his community service next year is saddened by the robbery as he had medical books worth thousands and an expensive stethoscope in the car.”

She says that his Macbook and iPad were also in the vehicle.

“We just can be thankful that they were not violent and rough. We complied with their demands and gave them what they asked for.”

Bellas says after the robbers left she made contact with the Community Policing Forum.

“They quickly responded and in a matter of minutes they, the police and paramedics were at the store to give assistance.

“I would really like to thank them for their swift response time.”

She says that it is the first time in ten years that their store was robbed.
