Before the day had started for the average working person in Krugersdorp on Tuesday 17 December paramedics already had attended to multiple injured people who had been involved in taxi accidents in Krugersdorp.
According to ER24 spokesperson Chris Botha, just before 7am ER24 paramedics attended to a collision scene involving a taxi on Chamdor Road in Krugersdorp.
“The evidence on scene suggested that because of a greasy substance on the road surface the taxi skidded and overturned.”
“This incident caused moderate injuries to all 14 passengers,” he says.
On their way back from the scene, paramedics were called to a second scene along the same road where a light motor vehicle rear-ended a taxi.
“This incident affected nine patients who suffered minor to moderate injuries,” says Botha.
Responding paramedic Tyrone Pieterse says these incidents are common to his crew.
“We attend to at least one taxi collision every day.”
Pieterse says the main causes for these incidents might be alcohol-related and the fact that most of the vehicles are not roadworthy.
He adds that attending to incidents where there were multiple patients posed a challenge as far as resources are concerned, saying that often extra resources are needed for more serious incidents.
“Taxi collisions are mass casualty scenes that usually require the use of between two and four ambulances,” he says.
All patients were transported to various hospitals for further treatment.
