‘Tis the season for potatoes

The potato is the only food crop that meets two of the Department of Health’s Food Based Dietary Guidelines.

The Festive Season is upon us and with it comes a variety of traditions – presents, Christmas trees and of course the feasts.

Cooking with family is a special part of the celebrations and the delectable potato plays an important role in this tradition. Whether it’s the traditional roast turkey with beautiful golden brown and crispy roast potatoes or summer braais with steak, chops, warm jacket potatoes cooked in foil or a scrumptious potato salad sprinkled with chives, the potato is king.

Potato bread is also a wonderful addition to any festive gathering – use a simple bread recipe and add potato, onion, sea salt and black pepper, and fold in rosemary, cheese and black olives.

A layered onion, potato and butternut oven bake is perfect with a traditional roast ham, while potato and corn fritters add a fresh take on a Christmas champagne breakfast.

Potatoes in potjies and curries, pap en vleis or fish and chips, mashed, fried, baked, boiled and braaied – there is a dish for every South African.

What’s more, the potato is the only food crop that meets two of the Department of Health’s Food Based Dietary Guidelines.

Delicious and nutritional, potatoes are naturally fat free, a natural source of fibre, a great source of energy for the whole family and has a wealth of vitamins and minerals.
