Ultimate fan off to Brazil

"We are huge soccer fans and I still cannot believe we won, whoohoo!"

Eschel and his wife Shirlene Smit hit the jackpot.

During a routine trip to their favourite fast-food outlet in Luipaarsvlei, Eschel decided to enter the McDonald’s 2014 FIFA World Cup Promotion … and he won.

Eschel became the chain of hamburger fast food restaurants’ sixth winner to receive an all expenses paid trip to Brazil to watch a semifinal match of the FIFA World Cup. He recently received his prize at a handover event at McDonald’s and the news was present during the celebrations.

“We are blown away completely since it is the first time we have won anything,” says Eschel.

Eschel’s wife is even more excited since she will be accompanying her husband on this once-in-a-lifetime trip.

“We are huge soccer fans and I still cannot believe we won, whoohoo!” Shirlene shouted.

McDonald’s South Africa has brought the dream of 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil within reach for all South Africans, says Daniel Padiachy, their senior director marketing.

To date, McDonald’s has given away six double tickets to lucky winners from Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Free State, Limpopo and North West. The promotion was launched on 13 February and will end on 30 April.

“I truly feel blessed that God answered my prayer to win this competition, and I am really excited about the trip. I cannot wait to go,” said the 34-year-old father of three.

Eschel and his wife will stay at the picture-perfect Sheraton Rio Hotel and Resort and will get to experience the city of Rio and do tourist activities such as riding the popular cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain. They will have access to pre and post-match VIP hospitality in McDonald’s private suite, and entrance to the FIFA Fan Fest on Copacabana Beach.

Brazil is a fitting destination to watch soccer – it is the only country to have participated in every soccer world cup and has produced some of soccer’s biggest names including Kaká (Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite), Ronaldinho (Ronaldo de Assis Moreira) and of course the legendary Pélé (Edson Arantes do Nascimento).
